If you follow me on Instagram you may remember from my stories that I scheduled our family’s holiday mini session super last minute. Like, the night before. Needless to say, I had “nothing to wear” and was at Target bright and early the morning of the shoot. Luckily, I found a really cute jumpsuit that happened to be on clearance for $6 – so it all worked out! But, if you aren’t like me and actually plan ahead, here are some ideas for styling your family’s photo shoot!

Dress for the weather
If you are shooting outside and it going to be cold, dress like you normally would in weather appropriate outerwear. Winter style photos are perfect for holidays! If you have little ones, you will NOT want them to be freezing and unhappy. It will be a much more pleasant experience for everyone to be comfortable!
Mix patterns and solids
Is it even a holiday photo if someone isn’t wearing plaid? No! But, too much of a good thing is… a bad thing. I like to keep the patterns on smaller bodies and have the adults wear solids. Play with textures in order to avoid a monotone look. Solid colored knit sweaters add such a cozy touch!
Add some glam
To me, the true holiday spirit is found in everything GLAM ! I mean, and having gratitude and kindess and all of that… 😉 But seriously, don’t be afraid to spice things up with a bold lip or sparkly accent! For our holiday pictures, I opted for a pop of color on my lip and a fun hat. Other times of the year may call for a more understated or natural look, the holidays really are extra… and you can be too!
If you don’t have time to get the most stylish outfits together, or something else (inevitably) goes wrong – just have fun! No clothing will enhance a photo as much as a happy, relaxed expression. The energy at a shoot really is captured through the lens – and there is nothing more beautiful than a happy family!
